What is atmosphere? Week 1 excerise

Group: Molly Lewis, Abby Culver, Ryan Scott, Molly Gilpin and Emma Solomon.
As a group these are the answers we got from the question "what is atmosphere?"
Based on the knowledge we each individually had about atmosphere and what we had learnt from week 1 readings.

Moods
  • They can change depending, a solemn atmosphere can be created by a serious mood.
  • Only since the 18th Century, has it been used for moods, referred to moods that are "in the air".
  • Before that it was only referred to as an envelope of air that carries the weather.
  • Can be involved wherever something is being staged or wherever a design is a factor.
  • The way in which it communicates a feeling to us as participating subjects.

Producing atmospheres
  • In 20th Century, came light and sound through electrical technology.
  • This allowed for atmosphere to be created in not only physical space but acoustic. Producing an atmosphere is what you make of a subject or object as an individual.

Feeling atmospheres
  • An atmosphere is like a sixth sense.
  • They relationship between the human and atmosphere can be felt more strongly in certain, familiar places or unconscious situations.
  • Humans can sense a different or similar atmosphere to others and the atmosphere can affect the human in different ways.

Place and atmosphere
  • Different scenes such as an exhibition in a gallery, creates different atmosphere for each human and subject. Compared to entering a forest where it could be a really peaceful atmosphere or could make the human feel really uncomfortable.
  • Atmospheres are different for each person depending on how you interpret and/or maximize the space.
  • Affected and moved by the things around us causes for atmospheric conditions.
